يُعرف اليونان في يومنا الحالي بلدًا له وحدته السياسية وشعبًا له قومية واحدة، لكن هذا لم يكن الحال أبدا قبل العصر الهيللينستي، فقد كانت "بلاد اليونان" بدلاً من (بلد) اليونان وكان شعبها عبارة عن شعوب منفصلة هم فيما بينهم غرباء وتحكمهم القبلية والانتماء للدم أو الرقعة الجغرافية الصغيرة المتمثلة في الدولة المدنية بدلاً من الرقعة الجغرافية الأكبر وهي بلاد اليونان التي نعرفها اليوم، وسوف يحاول الباحث أن يُؤأصل لبداية ظهور نزعة الهوية الهيللينية والدور الذي لعبته الحروب الفارسية في ذلك فقد اعتمد الإغريق بشكل أساس على تشويه الآخر لكي يبرزوا هويتهم، وقد أدى ذلك إلى عنصرية لم تخف حتى في كتابات أشهر فلاسفتهم كأفلاطون وأرسطو، إلا أن هذه العنصرية بدأت في التلاشي في بداية العصر الهيللينستى وتعميم فكرة أن الهوية مرتبطة بالتعليم والتحضر أكثر منها عرق أو محل ميلاد، ثم أصبحت الهوية مفهوماً شرفيًّا فقط اعتمده الرومان لاسترضاء الأرسطوقراطيين الإغريق حتى يضمنوا استقرار ملكهم في بلاد اليونان، وبعد انتشار المسيحية أصبحت كلمة "هيلليني" الدالة على الهوية هي مصطلح يُطلق على الوثنيين بينما أطلق الهليينين المسيحيين على أنفسهم "الروم".
