لعب العامة دوراً هاماً فى العقيدة فى مصر القديمة و بصفة خاصة من خلال ما عُرف بإسم "العبادة الشعبية" و "التقوى الشخصية" ، والتى انتشرت بشکل کبير منذ عصر الدولة الحديثة فصاعداً. ومن اهم الأماکن التى مارس فيها عامة الشعب عباداتهم مجموعة من المقاصير التى عُرفت فى اللغة المصرية القديمة بإسم الخنو "xnw" ، والتى يُعتقد انها ظهرت منذ عصر الدولة الحديثة. وهى عبارة عن مقاصير صغيرة أقُيمت فى الشوارع والحارات فى القرى والمدن و إستخدمها عامة الشعب فى عبادتهم وإقامة شعائرهم وکانت الخنو ذات تخطيط بسيط جداً ، ويوضع بداخلها تمثال صغير او لوحة بصورة المعبود يتوجه اليها العامة بالعبادة وتقديم القرابين. ومن امثلة الخنو التى عرفنها من خلال النصوص او الحفائر: *خنو الملک رمسيس الثانى. *خنو بتاح. *خنو امون رع. *خنو قسرتى. *خنو حور ام آخت.
