Foundation Inscriptions on Mamluk Bridges in Chouf (Lebanon) (Technical and Analytical Study)

Abstract

This article focuses on two Arabic inscriptions founded on two Mamluk bridges in the southern part of Mount Lebanon (the Emirate of Chouf); It studies them analytically in order to show the importance of these inscriptions in studying the region historically, politically, economically and socially, and to highlight their importance in redrawing the ancient Mamluk roads and paths, and to clarify the importance of these roads and paths during the Mamluk era in terms of trade, military and civil matters, and for the precise scientific determination of the time period that these roads were established or expanded, whether they belong to the Mamluk era or to earlier or more recent periods. It also studies them from a technical point of view to show local writing trends, and the extent to which they were affected by the general and the common writing style during the Mamluk era. The process of studying the content of these inscriptions will also help us to identify the reasons for the Bridge construction, which reflects the importance enjoyed by the Emirate of Chouf, and it highlights the privileges enjoyed by its residents, and the logistical dimensions of Sultan in ensuring the stability of areas far from the Mamluk ruling center, and to tighten control over the international trade lines that linked between Egypt and the Levant.
