An artistic archaeological study of the manuscript of the Qur’an of Al-Mashhad Mosque in Bardis, Sohag(Dated in 1309 AH / 1892 AD)

Abstract

This study dealt with the publication and study of a Qur’an manuscript preserved in one of the mosques of the villages of Upper Egypt, which is the copy of al-Mushaf of al-Mashhad Mosque in Bardis, Sohag, as a model for Qur’anic manuscripts during the period of the end of the 19th century AD. It is one of the manuscript copies even though the printing of the Qur’an was known before that period, but the copyist's keenness to make an effort to copy the Qur'an by hand reflects the sanctity of the manuscript and its importance in the hearts of Muslims.
The study focused on the history of copying the Qur’an, which is Shawwal 1309 AH / 1892 AD, and the endowment of the Qur’an. Sheikh Hassan Muhammad Abu al-Saud was keen on specifying his endowment on al-Mashhad Mosque in Bardis and reviewed the types of fonts used in copying the manuscript of the Qur’an, which are the Naskh font and the Thuluth font. The article focuses as well on the industrial and technical features and characteristics used. The production of this copy revolved around simple geometric shapes and some modified plant elements with the use of the method of pressure in the implementation of geometric shapes in the binding of the Qur’an.
The study concluded a number of results; the most important of which was the publication of a complete Holy Qur’an for the first time. The study also found the date of this copy of the Qur’an in Shawwal 1309 AH / 1892 AD, and that the one that made it was Sheikh Hassan Muhammad Abu al-Saud. The study also concluded that this Qur’an was free of errors. The discussion addressed the errors of forgetting, repetition or substitution, by rewriting it in the margins, and the study of this copy showed its expression of the spirit and nature of the place in which it was copied and its simplicity, both in the industrial and decorative methods used.
