The City of Kahat in The light of what is reflected in The Texts of Mari and Tell Leilan

Abstract

               This research aims to shed light on the city of Kahat, which is one of the most important cities in the Khabur River Triangle. It was an important trade center on the road from Qaţţunan to Šubat-Enlil, and due to its commercial importance and being the strategic depth of Assyria, it was coveted by the Assyrians; Where many military campaigns were directed to it.
               It also represented one of the most important grazing areas, meaning that it provides a safe area for grazing, especially during the summer months. Hence, the Mari kings were interested in seizing it; Its importance was indicated by the fact that the year in which King Zimri-Lim seized it was known as the year in which he seized Kakat, despite the presence of many important events at the beginning of his reign. as mentioned in the records of Tell-Leilan; Where two treaties were concluded between Till-Abnu, the king of Abum and Jamşi - Hatnû, the king of Kahat, aiming to provide military support to the city of Kahat whenever it needed it. The research was appended with a number of results, perhaps the most important of which are:
-The city of Kaha t was of great importance; It was an important commercial center on the road from Qaţţunan to Šubat-Enlil, and it was of great political importance that made it coveted by the kings of Assyria, and so many military campaigns were directed at it.
- King Shamshi-Adad I was keen to seize the city of Kahat as part of his plan to expand the borders of his empire towards the northwest; As its capture was a step in the way of seizing and controlling the territory of Zalmaqoum.
- The Mari kings became more interested in the city of Kahat and taking it over, as it was an important pasture for their flocks, especially in the summer (drought); The lack of pasture and the difficulty of access to it would be a concern for them
