Blood offerings and Human Sacrifices from Examples in Ottoman Illustrated Manuscripts

Abstract

Blood Offerings and human sacrifice are all that a person presents to his idol in order to draw close to it. Various kinds of offerings were known to the first human since the beginning of creation in the era of Adam, peace be upon him. They were inherited through generations, with some rituals added to it. The study investigates blood offerings and human sacrifices through paintings of Ottoman manuscripts, where the manuscript depictions reflect the manifestations of human social and religious life in all its details, including that this phenomenon that has followed through the ages. The study presents the definition of sacrifices and the origin of offerings and their types: human and animal sacrifices. In addition, it identifies the rituals of offering sacrifices, their method and tools.
The illustrations of manuscriptsin10A.H /16M and beginning 11A.H/17M in the Ottoman era reflected many types of sacrifices and offerings: human or animal. Some manuscripts, from previous eras of human offerings, reflect such offerings as the sacrifice of prophets Ibrahim and Jesus (the royal offering), peace be upon them, and the offering of the grandfather of Prophet Mohamed, Abdul Muttalib with his son Abdullah, in front of the Kaaba. Animal sacrifices were illustrated in the sacrifices of Cain and Abel. One of the offerings made in the Ottoman era is the slaughter in front of the Kaaba. The research also compares types of offering paintings in contemporary schools and highlighting their artistic features
