The tomb of Sidi Abd al-Rahman al-Thaalbi in the city of Algiers (an archaeological historical study)

Abstract

Many Zawayas( corners) and mausoleums were established in the city of Algiers in the Ottoman period.It played an important social, religious, and economical role to the extent that some of the townships (neighborhoods) within the city became called by its name: Houmt Sidi Hilal, Houmt Sidi Ramadan, Houmt Sidi El Fassi and others. It is possible to distinguish two types of them: the zawiyas of shrines, that is, those that contain the tombs of the righteous Sheikhs, such as the zawiya of Sidi Abd al-Rahman al-Thaalbi, the zawiya of Omar al-Tanasi and others.The zawiyas that do not include the tombs of the saints, and were established for specific purposes: the zawiya of Kajawa, which is for education, the zawiya of Al-Ashraf (nobles) which belongs to the category of nobles and others. The number of mausoleums and Zawayas in the city of Algiers have been doubled since the late sixteenth century, when Muhammad bin Ali Al-Tamgrouti, who visited and stayed there for two months after returning from his embassy from Istanbul between 1589 and 1590, said: (In this city is the tomb of the righteous Sheikh, Abi Zaid Abd Al-Rahman Al-Tha’alibi and the tomb of the righteous Abu Al-Abbas Ahmed bin Abdullah Al-Jaza’iri, and the tomb of the righteous Abu Al-Nour, as he was called among the people of the town, and his tomb is located at the top of the mountain, until he says: “..and there are other righteous people in it".
