Abstract

This research deals with the role of the Jews during the reign of Sultan Selim I in the economy in the Ottoman era, and these Jews had a prominent role in minting coins in the Egyptian minting house, direct supervision of the minting house, and supplying metals necessary for it to mint coins, in addition to their work in the exchange profession, And the Jews working in the minting house were able to destroy the currency of gold, silver and new coins, and it was not enough for that, but Ibrahim the Jew, the master of the minting house, was empowered to take the coins of the Muslims.
The research indicated that the writing of the date of Sultan Selim I’s accession to the throne was not acknowledged and contented with writing the actual minting date of the coins. A legal characteristic of this sultan, as he came to overthrow the Mamluk state, so coins were minted as is usual in the Mamluk state. The research also indicated the Jewish teachers' keenness to continue the influences and decorations that appeared on the Mamluk coins on the coins of Sultan Selim I, which was represented in the general shape of the dinar that the writings on the front and back came in parallel horizontal lines within two prominent circles, the inner one is a linear circle, while the outer one is a circle of non-contact grains And the continuation of the decoration of the refracted waves running from left to right that separate the lines of the back writings. Besides, the research shows the role of Jews in engraving the David’s star on sultan Selim’s coins for the first time in the history of Ottoman coinage, which was obvious between the lines of the reverse inscriptions.
