Headdress of the Virgin Mary Between the"Religious" Text and the Historical Culture (An Arhcaeological Study)

Abstract

In spite of the axial role of the "Virgin Mariam" in the Christan creed, her depicition in art was vague till the Ephesus'Decree in 431 AD; with which she was officially elevated to be the "Mother's God" "Theotokos". This title corresponds with "iconography" in which she wears a long robe (the tunic) and long and wide cloak (the palla) over it.
This study will be focusing on the early "image" or representation of the (virgin's) attire before Ephesus'decree -and questionizing when she covered her head? through "Announciation" subject which related to the "Virgin" the discussion goes.
