Battle of Halulu/Halule in 691 BC: Its Causes and Consequences

Abstract

Abstract:
This research aims to shed light on the Battle of Halulu/Halule, the battle whose events took place between the Elamite and Babylonian camps and their allies on the one hand, and Assyria on the other hand. It was every one of these parties Driven to achieve his interests, Elam, which was always keen to support Babylon and make it a pressure card on Assyria and a protective arm against Assyria’s repeated attacks, and Babylon, which sought to get rid of Assyrian control and hegemony, as well as the Arameans and Ellibi. Assyria wanted to control the economic resources in this region.
The outcome of this battle was inconclusive for both sides, and Babylonian and Assyrian records were relied upon to deal with the events of the battle. Perhaps the most important results reached are the following:
* The common interests of the coalition forces played a large role in forming their coalition against Assyria in the Battle of Halulu/Halule.
- Elam, which strived to support and support the rebellious movements in Babylon, out of a desire to cause internal chaos in it, in order to eliminate the cohesion and unity of the country, and then control it. This is so that it can create an obstacle to the Assyrian campaigns, or at least it can stop Assyria’s rapid advance towards its lands.
- Ellibi, which wanted to get rid of Assyrian control; As it was destroyed by King Sennacherib, it participated in the coalition forces hostile to Assyria.
- Babylon, which wanted independence and distance from Assyrian control, which forced its king to seek help from Elam.
- The Aramaic tribes, which suffered greatly from Assyria’s siege, destruction, and deportation of their population to Nineveh. Where the Assyrian capital is, which prompted it to ally with Babylon and the Elamite camp in the Battle of Halule.
