Messa (Artamis ) model of rural settlements in Cyrenaica

Abstract

Artemis is one of the important rural settlements established by the Greek settlers at the end of the seventh century B.C. It is about 25 km away from the mother city (Cyrene), and it meets most of the conditions that the Greeks adopted to establish colonies, a continuous water source, arable land, A nearby port to connect with the Greek world. This town has the second largest cemeteries in the region. In the vicinity of this town there are quarries and  old buildings such as, temples, forts, baths, churches, dams, water tanks and many buildings that need to be excavated in order to know their identity. The town is connected to a port 15 km away to connect with the cities of the region and the countries of Greece. This town has been associated with a number of forts dating back to the classic period to protect the Cyrenaica Plateau, but unfortunately in recent years many of these sites have been destroyed as a result of the division of the archaeological area and its sale to citizens by landowners. This prompted the researcher to write this research to educate citizens about the importance of the town and document what can be documented despite the difficulty of entering the archaeological area now. The researcher tried to conduct an analytical descriptive study in order to link the settlement of Artemis with the surrounding areas from the coast to the last site where the remains of classical antiquities were found near the town of  Slonta. Through this study, the importance of Artemis settlement is shown economically and defensively ,because it represents the boundary between the areas inhabited by the Greeks and the Libyan population, and it represents a Greek culture In conclusion, it was not influenced by Roman culture, especially in the construction of cemeteries and temples
