Abstract

Islamic coins are considered official and governmental documents that cannot be suspicious in terms of inscriptions and decorations on it. It is an original source of history because it provides historians and researchers with information and names that are not mentioned in historical sources. Furthermore, coins are like a mirror that reflects all the aspects of life during the period of time in which it has been coined, such as political, economic, religious, social, literary, and  artistic circumstances, etc.
In this research, a rare Dirham of revolution in the Arab Sassanid style that bears the name of Abdullah bin Umayyah struck  in Sagestan in 75 A H is published and studied. The dirham is preserved in Mr. Ibrahim El Zamel’s collection in Riyadh and it has never been studied or published before. This research describes the Dirham accurately and scientifically, clarifying its general shape, inscriptions, and decorations. In addition, it analyzes these inscriptions, shedding light on the owner of this dirham, Abdullah bin Umayyah (the rebel)in Sagestan in 75 AH after the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik bin Marawan removed him from ruling Sagestan in 74 A.H.  Abdullah bin Umayyah rejected that and protested against him and did not give him any consideration, setting off his revolution, which lasted until the year 77 A.H.  Thus, This dirham is a new and important addition to Islamic coins in general, and coins of the revolutionaries against the Umayyad Caliphate in particular
